Following the very successful RLSS UK National Water Safety Management Programmes run by Far Frontiers in June 2015 we are pleased to announce we will be holding another course on the 19th May 2017 (in The Cotswolds).

Far Frontiers Expeditions are among the first in the outdoor industry to recognise and fully back the RLSS UK National Water Safety Management Programme. Christopher Short, Managing Director, is a qualified instructor, capable of facilitating the RLSS UK National Water Safety Management Programme thus allowing us to be able to offer this important training and qualification.

“The course has made me re visit our risk assessments for water based field work, the new assessments are more robust and I am far more confident that should an incident occur I will make the right decisions.” Geoff Lockwood, Head of Biology

Why do I need this for my school trip?

From taking water samples in the River Ray to crossing rivers in the Jungles of Borneo. Water Margin Safety is increasingly a high concern on school trips. 65% of inland drowning's occur at rivers and streams, the majority of these happen within 5 metres of the shore or bank. This is a nationally recognised qualification that is arguably essential for anyone working in the UK or overseas who will be responsible for managing groups by or in the water for recreation.

Who's it for?

· Teachers - P.E, CCF, Biology, Geography, DofE Co-ordinators
· Teachers/supervisors responsible for managing a group on a field trip around water margins.
· Expedition Leaders

What is it?

A practical training course looking at increasing safety awareness when managing groups by or in water and providing basic water rescue techniques.

Level 1
Water Safety Awareness Module - Self-Study Unit. There is a question section to answer.

Water Safety Awareness Module – Guided learning
This is a mainly class room based session which follows on from the self-study pack which you will complete prior to attendance at the course. Following a careful study of generic open-water hazards and control options, there is a dry practical emergency response session focussing mainly on Shout, Signal, Reach and Throw techniques.

Level 2 (River)
This session will start off in the classroom looking at the River environment and hazard identification, this will then move to an outdoor location where the theory will be put into practice. This session will include practical in water activities such as throw and wade rescues. Those under taking this module can expect to go in to the water up to your waist only.

Level 3
In Water Rescue
This session will include practical in water activities such as throw and wade rescues.
This session will be the most physically demanding and is where, in a Lake environment you will be asked to demonstrate the skills required for this award:

· Ability to conduct a 30m swim and non-contact tow of a simulated conscious casualty.
· Ability to conduct a 15m swim tow of an unconscious casualty.
· Ability to dive underwater to a depth of 1.5m.
