An incredible 7 day summer expedition to the wonderful Hardangervidda Mountain plateau in central Norway. We undertake our Gold DofE Qualifying Expedition through this rolling hilly moorland and wild camp amongst the breathtaking surroundings. A really exhilarating challenge in Norway’s pristine wilderness!
Day 1 London – Oslo Torp
We fly to Oslo Torp airport on the south east coast of Norway. As we come into land we will have our first views of Norway’s natural beauty; this region is dominated by rugged coastline and numerous islands. On arrival we will meet our private transport and then drive 240km westwards to the town of Hovden. On arrival we will check into to our lodge for the night and enjoy a delicious evening meal.
Day 2 Trek Familiarisation
This morning, after breakfast in our lodge, we will prepare ourselves for our Gold DofE Expedition. We will check our camping equipment including our tents, cooking stoves and expedition food. With our leader we will also review our trekking routes and run through our expedition rules in detail.
It is then time to head out into the Nordic wilderness for a short trek. The area that we are trekking in is the Hardangervidda, Norway’s largest National Park. Here, we have the opportunity to experience some of Norway’s finest landscapes. There will be plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife; we may encounter beaver damming isolated lakes or see elk wandering through the forest. Ospreys nest in this area so we might see their spectacular fishing antics along the river.
Tonight we will wild camp near a lake or stream and get a feel for the terrain.
Days 3-6 Gold DofE Qualifying Expedition
After a final check of our kit we will begin our personal challenge in this spectacular mountain environment.
We will trek on the rolling moorland each day for 4-6 hours, map reading as we go, carrying our own equipment and purifying water from local streams. We will get to really appreciate the landscape as we test our navigational skills using natural features to follow our routes. Each night we will camp at our pre-planned location, enjoying the remoteness of the Hardangervidda.
We will finish our expedition back in the town of Hovden. We will check-in to our lodge and look forward to a hearty evening dinner to celebrate our achievement.
